I love the Soul Calibur series. It’s probably my favorite fighting game series. That being said, I was pretty excited when Soul Calibur 5 was announced. Now the SC series has been going downhill a little (‘cuz of Star Wars Characters), and honestly, SC5 has brought it back to its former glory. It’s no SC2, but still, it’s a great game. Everything that made the first 2 so great are back, epic music, unique characters, you name it.
I’ll start off with my personal favorite part of the game, the Character Creation. This is the best Character Creation I’ve ever seen in a fighting game. Everything is great about this. Seriously, you can create anything, from your own original character, to a character from another game, or you can just say screw it and create a weird purple man named Mr. Qwiggles and his 2 minions 4LLEN and Paco.
You can put your Abominations to test in Quick mode, which is where you have to fight other hilarious looking characters to the death. I found this to be very enjoyable, and I think that other fighting games should try something like this. Seriously this quick mode thing is freaking addicting, it always made my day better than it was.
The online play works smoothly and it’s great to see other people character creations. Also the graphics are really good, and let’s not forget the excellent music Soul Calibur 5 has. Oh yes, this has one of the most beautiful soundtracks I’ve ever heard.
Now let’s talk about the cast in Soul Calibur 5. Each character is unique in their own way, there are really no copies, which is something I feel fighting games have been lacking in recently. We see several fan favorites return such as Nightmare, Tira, Mitsurgui, Raphael, and Kilik. Also, Ezio Auditore is in it…..WIN. Ezio should be in more fighting games, he was freaking epic in SC5, easily the best character in the game, such a shame that the other new characters are so weak and annoying. With the exception of Viola, all of these characters are complete trash. None of them are really good, AT ALL. Seriously, would it be so hard not to put Talim, Seoung Mina, and Taki back in this game?
While the fighting is fun most of the time, the combos in SC5 are worthless and just annoying. Just ignore them. But besides that, the fighting is great.
Now there is a downside to this awesomeness, and that is unfortunately the story. It’s very easy, you can beat it in 3 and a half hours….OH YEAH FUN TIME
“Chapter start”
Patrokolos: Sissy! Watch out!
Pyrrha: AH! I don’t want to fight! Fighting is bad! Ron Paul said so!
Patrokolos: Don’t worry sissy, I’ll save you!
Pyrrha: Look out for that monster!
*Insert short battle here*
Both: YAY EVERTYTHING IS HAPPY AGAIN.
“Chapter End”
…..REAL CLEVER NAMCO.
So anyways, despite the horrid Story, Soul Calibur 5 is a great game, no Game of the Year, but still worth a purchase.
